Happy 4th of July! It felt good to spend Independence Day back on American soil! We left Tok this morning and headed for Delta Junction- the end of the Alaska-Canada Highway! We made it all the way to the end!
We stopped at the visitors center to take our picture by the post marking the end of the highway. We traveled all 1422 miles of the Al-Can! We also took some pictures of the gigantic mosquito sculptures by the visitors center. Alaskan mosquitos are known to be quite large, and I have to say, that statement is quite true. |
We met up with Timothy Mathews and his wife Felicia, who have lived in Delta Junction for the past few years, but Timothy grew up in the same town that my mom did. We walked over to get ice cream from the Buffalo Drive In, which is only open in the summer and is famous for their soft-serve ice cream. When the store closes for the winter, only the vanilla ice cream is sold in stores and buyers have to go to the actual dairy farm to get any of the flavored ice cream. We enjoyed lunch and ice-cream at Buffalo Drive In, said our goodbyes, and headed for Fairbanks! |
Luckily it was only a few short hours away in comparison to the driving we have been doing in the past few days. We parked the RV in the campground and went to do some exploring. Fairbanks is a fairly large town and has recently become more developed. We stopped at an REI to look around, and then headed to some friends house that live up here. The Walters, who my parents have known from Greeneville, TN (where my mom grew up) and from college, have lived in Fairbanks for the past 12 years and have recently adopted a little Ethiopian girl named Noelle. We enjoyed dinner at their house, sitting on the back deck, ,playing with Noelle, and even roasting marshmallows over a fire! They had some great stories to tell about their time in Alaska and it was a great evening!
